Choosing a second pair of glasses you will actually use

Backup glasses, a different everyday style or prescription reading glasses: decide what your second pair needs to do.

Give the second pair a job

A second pair is most useful when it solves a specific problem. You might want a backup for a misplaced pair, a different look for work or weekends, or a separately prescribed pair for reading. Start with that purpose instead of buying another frame just because it is different.

If you depend on your glasses throughout the day, a comfortable backup can save you from having no usable pair when your main glasses break. It still needs the appropriate prescription and fit; an old pair with an outdated prescription is not automatically a suitable substitute.

For a backup, favor a familiar fit

Use a pair you already like as the reference. Compare lens width, bridge width and temple length, then look at rim shape and material. Similar numbers help narrow the search but do not promise the same feel.

A backup can be a different color while keeping roughly the same proportions. That makes it easier to choose a second pair you are happy wearing for a full day. Our guide to matching your current fit explains the comparison.

For a style change, vary one thing at a time

If your main pair is a dark rectangle, compare a lighter color, a rounder outline or a thinner rim. Changing all three at once makes it harder to tell which change you actually like.

Try a round frame for curves, a cat-eye for upswept corners or a metal frame for a different rim style. Use the face shape guide for ideas, then confirm the measurements before adding either pair to your cart.

For reading, confirm the right prescription

A distance prescription and a reading prescription serve different purposes. Do not guess a reading power or change the numbers yourself. If you want prescription reading glasses, use the prescription your eye care professional provides for that purpose.

Fast Eyeglasses currently fills single vision orders. If your prescription lists an ADD for bifocals or progressives, contact us before ordering. Read prescription reading glasses versus readers for the basic differences.

Budget for each finished pair

The $79 base pair includes a frame and single vision prescription lenses. Optional lens upgrades and prescription surcharges can change each pair’s total. Compare the finished choices in your cart; do not assume a second-pair discount or that both pairs have identical lens needs.

Most basic pairs ship within 2 business days. That is production timing, not a promise that the package arrives within two days. See the shipping policy and choose the second pair you will be glad to have when you need it.
