How to read your prescription
Your eyeglass prescription has a row for each eye. OD (oculus dexter) is your right eye and OS (oculus sinister) is your left eye. Some prescriptions write R and L instead.
| Eye | SPH | CYL | AXIS |
|---|---|---|---|
| OD | -1.75 | -0.50 | 090 |
| OS | -1.50 | DS | — |
- SPH (sphere) is the main lens power. A minus sign means nearsighted; a plus sign means farsighted. "PL" or "Plano" means 0.00.
- CYL (cylinder) corrects astigmatism. If it's blank, or says DS or SPH, choose 0.00.
- AXIS is a number from 1 to 180 that goes with CYL. You only need it when CYL isn't 0.00.
- ADD is extra power for bifocals and progressives. We make single vision lenses only, so if your prescription has an ADD, email us before ordering.
Contact lens prescriptions are different from eyeglass prescriptions. Please use your eyeglass prescription.
How to measure your PD
PD (pupillary distance) is the distance between the centers of your pupils, in millimeters. It tells us where to center your lenses. Most adults are between 54 and 74 mm; kids are usually between 43 and 58 mm.
- Stand about 8 inches from a mirror with a millimeter ruler.
- Hold the ruler flat against your brow.
- Close your right eye and line up the 0 with the center of your left pupil.
- Close your left eye, open your right, and read the mark at the center of your right pupil.
- Do it three times and use the most common number.
If your prescription shows two numbers, like 31.5/32, that's a dual PD. Choose "Two numbers" at checkout.
Frame size guide
Frame sizes are three numbers in millimeters, printed inside the temple arm, like 52□18-140.
- Lens width (52): the width of one lens. This is the number that matters most for fit.
- Bridge (18): the gap between the lenses, over your nose.
- Temple (140): the length of the arm, from hinge to tip.
Find a pair that fits you well and match the lens width within 2 mm. Kids' frames generally run 42 to 49 mm.
