How to pick out eyeglasses online: 8 steps to frames you'll love

Can't try them on? You can still pick out glasses online that fit and look great. Here's the step-by-step way to choose frames from a screen.

The biggest worry about buying glasses online is "what if they don't look right?" The good news: most of what makes glasses look and feel right can be checked before you order. Here's how to pick out eyeglasses online in eight steps.

1. Start with a pair that fits

Grab glasses you already own that feel comfortable. Look inside the temple arm or on the bridge for three numbers, like 52-18-140. That's your starting size. Our guide to finding your glasses size explains each number and what to do if you can't find them.

2. Filter by size first

Size matters more than style for comfort. On our shop page you can filter by small (42 to 49 mm), medium (50 to 53 mm) or large (54 mm and up) lens width. Stay within about 2 to 3 mm of your current lens width and bridge for a similar fit.

3. Match the shape to your face

  • Round face: rectangle and square frames add definition.
  • Square face: round and oval frames soften strong angles.
  • Oval face: most shapes work. Try something bolder.
  • Heart-shaped face: oval, round or bottom-heavy frames balance a wider forehead.

See our full face shape guide.

4. Pick a color for your skin tone and wardrobe

Black and tortoise go with almost everything. Warm skin tones often look great in tortoise, brown, gold and warm reds; cool skin tones shine in black, gray, silver, blue and burgundy. Not sure? Choose the color of something you wear often. You can preview every color on the frame page.

5. Think about your eyebrows

The top of the frame should follow or sit just below your eyebrows. Frames that hide your brows completely can look heavy; frames that sit far below can look small.

6. Choose the right lenses

Strong prescription? Thicker lenses look best in smaller frames with plastic rims. Consider 1.67 high-index lenses. Kids and active wearers do best with polycarbonate. Learn more in our single vision lens guide.

7. Have your prescription and PD ready

You'll need your eyeglass prescription and your PD. If your PD isn't on your prescription, measure it at home. Making reading glasses? Your reading PD is about 3 mm smaller, and we'll adjust it for you at checkout.

8. Avoid the common mistakes

  • Picking a frame much wider or narrower than your current pair
  • Choosing a style only because it looked good on a model
  • Typing your prescription without double-checking against the paper (uploading a photo helps us catch mistakes)
  • Forgetting that custom glasses are made to order and final sale. Read our return policy before you buy.
