Vision usually changes gradually, so many people don't realize how much they've been compensating until they put on new glasses and suddenly see individual leaves on trees again. If you notice any of the signs below, it's a good time to book an eye exam.
10 common signs
- Blurry vision at a distance (road signs, TV) or up close (phone, menus).
- Squinting to see clearly. Squinting temporarily sharpens focus, so it's a classic tell.
- Frequent headaches, especially after reading, screen time or driving.
- Eye strain or tired eyes at the end of the day.
- Trouble seeing at night, with glare, halos or starbursts around headlights.
- Holding things farther away to read them. A common sign of presbyopia, usually starting in your 40s.
- Sitting closer to the TV or leaning in toward your computer.
- Losing your place while reading, or reading the same line twice.
- Double vision or ghosting. See an eye doctor promptly for this one.
- Your current glasses feel weaker, or you see better without them for some tasks.
Signs in kids
Kids rarely say they can't see; they assume everyone sees the way they do. Watch for:
- Sitting very close to the TV or holding books close
- Squinting, frequent eye rubbing or covering one eye
- Headaches or tiredness after school
- Trouble seeing the board, or a drop in grades
- Tilting the head to look at things
Kids should have regular eye exams. When they need glasses, see our kids' glasses guide.
What these signs usually mean
- Blurry at a distance: often nearsightedness.
- Strain up close: farsightedness, or presbyopia after about 40.
- Blur at all distances or distortion: often astigmatism.
Only an eye exam can tell you for sure. An exam also checks your eye health, not just your prescription.
When to get help right away
Some symptoms aren't about glasses. Seek prompt medical care for sudden vision loss, sudden double vision, flashes of light, a shower of new floaters, a curtain or shadow over your vision, or eye pain.
How often should you get an eye exam?
Many eye doctors recommend an exam every one to two years for adults, and more often for kids, people over 60 and anyone with conditions like diabetes. Prescriptions usually expire after one to two years.
