A smear is a reason to clean, not to scrub harder
AR-coated lenses can show fingerprints clearly under a desk lamp. That does not mean the coating has failed. First check both the lenses and the cleaning cloth. A cloth that has collected skin oils can spread a film from one side to the other, leaving the same streak each time you wipe.
Keep one clean microfiber cloth in the case rather than loose beside keys or grit. Follow the cleaning instructions supplied with the actual lens and frame. A cleaning product approved for one surface is not automatically right for every coating.
A simple routine for ordinary daily dirt
- Wash and dry your hands so you do not put more oil on the lenses.
- Remove loose particles gently. Where the manufacturer permits, rinse with lukewarm water before wiping grit across the surface.
- Use a lens-safe cleaner or the manufacturer-approved mild cleaning method. Avoid household window cleaner and abrasive products.
- Dry gently with a clean microfiber cloth. Check the bridge and lens edges as well as the center.
- Inspect under a light before repeating. Change the cloth if the same greasy trail returns.
A clean shirt can still carry particles that scratch a lens. Paper towels, tissues and rough fabrics are poor substitutes for a suitable lens cloth. The ZEISS lens-care guide explains why gentle methods and appropriate materials matter.
Build a small workday cleaning kit
Put a lens-safe cleaner, a clean cloth and a protective case together. Keep the kit away from a hot dashboard or heater. Set glasses down with the lenses protected, and use the case when putting them into a bag. Do not wipe a gritty lens with the same cloth used to clean the outside of a dusty case.
For work outfits, pocket placement matters as much as color. A shirt pocket that bends the frame when you sit down is not useful storage. A structured case in a bag is a better plan than slipping the pair between a laptop and notebook.
When cleaning is not the answer
A scratch, persistent cloudy patch or peeling area may need inspection. Do not try polishing away a coating with toothpaste, alcohol mixtures or a household abrasive. Record when the problem began, which cleaner you used and whether the mark changes after gentle cleaning, then contact the seller about the applicable remedy.
See our warranty information and return and remake terms. Compare AR coating options if you are buying a new pair, but do not assume a coating upgrade repairs an existing damaged lens. Care instructions and warranty coverage should be checked for the exact product.
