Buying glasses online for the first time: what to expect

If you've only ever bought glasses at an eye doctor's office, ordering online can feel like a leap. Here's exactly what to expect, from your first click to your first week wearing them.

Millions of people now buy glasses online. If it's your first time, here's the whole experience, step by step, so nothing comes as a surprise.

Before you order: gather 3 things

  1. Your eyeglass prescription. Ask your eye doctor's office for a copy; you're entitled to one after your exam. A photo or scan works. Here's how to read it.
  2. Your PD. If it isn't on your prescription, measure it at home, or see what a normal PD looks like.
  3. Your current glasses (if you have them), to copy the size. See how to find glasses that fit like your current pair.

What ordering looks like

  1. Choose a frame, color and size.
  2. Choose your lenses: material, anti-glare and tint. Standard single vision lenses are included in the $79 price, and upgrades are priced as you pick them.
  3. Enter your prescription. You'll pick SPH, CYL and AXIS for each eye from drop-down menus. OD is your right eye, OS is your left.
  4. Enter your PD, and tell us if these are reading glasses (we'll adjust the PD for you if needed).
  5. Upload a photo of your prescription. It's optional if you typed it, but we recommend it: we compare the photo with what you typed and email you if anything doesn't match.
  6. Pay securely with PayPal, or a debit or credit card through PayPal.

After you order

  • Confirmation: you'll get an email with your order reference.
  • Prescription check: if a number looks unusual, we email you before your lenses are made.
  • Production: most single vision orders are made in one business day. Orders placed by 5 p.m. Eastern on a weekday usually start that day.
  • Shipping: free, with tracking, and usually 1 to 2 business days to Michigan, Oregon, Montana and Delaware.

Your first week in new glasses

New glasses can take a few days to feel natural, even when they're made perfectly. It's common to notice:

  • Floors or walls that seem slightly curved or tilted
  • A little eye fatigue at the end of the day
  • Things looking sharper or a different size than you're used to

Most people adjust within a few days, and almost everyone within one to two weeks. Here's more on adjusting to new glasses.

If the fit isn't perfect

Glasses often need a small adjustment to sit just right on your face. Any local optician can bend the temples or adjust nose pads in a few minutes. If something is wrong with the lenses themselves, email us within 14 days of delivery and we'll make it right if it's our mistake. Read our prescription & remake policy and return policy before you order: custom prescription glasses are made to order and final sale.

First-timer mistakes to avoid

  • Using a contact lens prescription. It's different. Here's why.
  • Mixing up OD and OS, or dropping a minus sign.
  • Forgetting CYL and AXIS. If your prescription has them, they're essential.
  • Choosing a frame far bigger or smaller than glasses that fit you.
  • Ordering on a Friday night and expecting Monday delivery. The lab works weekdays.
