Prescription glasses for reading sheet music: plan the stand distance

A score on a stand is not always at the same distance as a book in your hands. Give your provider the real rehearsal setup.

Compare the task, the fit and the actual order.

Measure the task in your normal position

For prescription glasses for reading sheet music, describe where the score sits while you actually play. Include a piano desk, a separate music stand or a tablet if those are part of the routine.

Use your ordinary seated or standing posture. Do not move the music unusually close just to make an old reading pair appear suitable. Tell your eye-care professional about the working distance and any visual difficulty.

Also describe the other things you need to see: a conductor, fellow musicians, the instrument or controls. The appropriate prescribed lens design depends on the tasks, not the word “music” in a product title.

Ask whether one task-specific pair is appropriate

A dedicated single-vision pair may be an option to discuss for a specific stand distance. It is not automatically an all-purpose pair for every distance in a rehearsal room.

Do not choose a power from an online music-reading chart or convert an ADD into SPH yourself. Ask the prescriber for the appropriate written prescription. Fast Eyeglasses currently offers eligible corrective single vision only, with no progressives, bifocals or prism.

Our reading and computer comparison explains the related working-distance question, while reading glasses vs. progressives covers switching tasks.

Compare fit with the equipment you use

Check whether the frame stays comfortably in position while you look between the score and instrument. Include any headphones or hearing protection you use in the fit conversation.

A thin arm alone does not guarantee comfort or suitable hearing-protection fit. Ask the relevant equipment provider about compatibility. Do not bend the frame repeatedly to force clearance or alter protective equipment.

For a tablet score, check the screen’s normal position and lighting. A coating is an optional lens-surface choice, not a substitute for the prescribed correction or suitable screen placement.

Order using the task-specific information

Keep the prescription, measured PD and frame measurements together. Answer the reading-use and prior-PD-adjustment question accurately at checkout; do not apply another adjustment to information already prepared for the task.

Everyday base pairs start at $79 with standard CR-39 single-vision lenses. Selected upgrades and applicable stronger-prescription charges add to the total. See reading-glasses ordering information for eligible orders.

Read custom-order return terms and confirm timing before a performance. Most basic pairs ship within two business days, with carrier transit afterward.

Common buying questions

Can I use ordinary readers at a music stand?

They may or may not suit the task. Ask your provider using the actual stand distance and your vision needs.

Does Fast Eyeglasses sell specialist progressive music lenses?

No. We currently offer eligible corrective single-vision lenses only. Ask an appropriate provider about other designs when needed.
