Bismarck with Kids: North Dakota Museum Time Cards
Make a Heritage Center visit easier to discuss by sorting observations into ‘long ago,’ ‘closer to today’ and ‘I need more information.’
Use questions instead of guessing dates
Draw three boxes on a card: long ago, closer to today, and needs more information. A child can sketch an observed shape or write a word in a box after consulting the exhibit information. The last box is important: appearances alone do not reliably date an object.
Let the activity help you choose a small number of stops. You do not have to cover the entire history of North Dakota in one visit, and a child does not need to memorize a timeline to notice change.
Give living communities their present tense
When an exhibit concerns Native peoples or other communities, use the museum’s specific context and respectful names. Do not make the timeline game imply that a community belongs only to the past. If you are unsure how a topic is presented, read the label and look for the community’s own voices.
Separate a fact from an invented story. A question about an object’s use can be interesting even when the available information does not answer it. Keep ‘I wonder’ in the notebook rather than replacing uncertainty with a confident-sounding guess.
Plan a comfortable looking route
Check the current map, access information and notices with the museum. Decide what amount of walking and looking suits your group, and make a pause part of the plan. Follow staff directions and all rules about distance, touching and photographs.
Check the wearer’s usual prescribed glasses before leaving. Keep the case in an accessible pocket and follow the supplied care instructions. If the spare pair is uncomfortable or out of date, address that before relying on it away from home.
Sort your own family objects later
At home, choose a few harmless objects and ask what evidence would help date them. An adult might know when something was bought, while another detail remains uncertain. Add the reliable information to a new card and keep the guesses labeled.
Fast Eyeglasses ships eligible online orders to North Dakota. The second-pair school-morning guide explains how to give a spare an agreed storage place. Current checkout uses one prescription per order, so ask us first about buying for different wearers.
