Portland, Maine with Kids: Three Tiny Museum-and-Theatre Story Scenes
Use a Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine outing to collect a beginning, a surprise and an ending for a small family story.
Let the beginning be ordinary
Start your story with something small that happened before the outing: finding a shoe, choosing a bag or wondering what the day would be like. A child can dictate one sentence while an adult writes it. A beginning does not need an exciting event to become a useful memory.
Choose the museum visit and any theatre plan from current venue information. A performance may need its own scheduling or booking decision, and the family can enjoy a museum outing without adding a show.
Find a surprise without making one happen
During the visit, ask what was different from what the child expected. It might be a color, a sound or a new way to pretend. Record the observation at a permitted stopping place. Do not disrupt an activity or another visitor in order to make a better story.
Keep the invented parts visibly separate from the real visit. ‘In our story, the chair could talk’ is playful; presenting that as something the museum actually offered would be misleading. The family story belongs to the child’s imagination.
Try the seated-listening check beforehand
If you are considering a performance, think about how the child likes to listen, sit and move. Read the venue’s current information and ask it about access needs rather than guessing what an experience will accommodate. Plan an adult-supervision arrangement that works for your group.
Check the wearer’s usual glasses for comfort with their chosen clothes. Carry a protective case and follow supplied care instructions. A second pair should be tried for the correct wearer and prescription before a day when you might need to rely on it.
Give the ending to the child
On the way home, ask what they want the last sentence to be. It can be funny, unresolved or simply ‘then we had enough.’ Fold the three sentences into a booklet and add a drawing later. There is no need to turn the visit into homework.
